If one reads the original, early canons dealing with the celibacy issue in the Latin Church, the issue is always that somehow the sex act itself is somehow always sinful. The first canon that lead eventually to the edict demanding the celibacy of all clergy stated that married priests, when they committed the sex act with their wives, always committed fornication. The preferred state, for both men and women, was celibacy. It was never a man/woman issue, but one of sex. Not the same thing.<br /><br />Also, one finds the same attitude alive in the Eastern Church as well, it was not limited to the west.
