That's why I continue to read your blog for updates on Tolkien stories even though I sometimes think you're getting to be out of hand in other matters.:)Juliohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06893150601023369479noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8192580971664762668.post-18407894377612203662011-06-10T15:08:52.425+01:002011-06-10T15:08:52.425+01:00Thanks Julio. This is actually the version of the tale as found in The History of Middle-earth Volume X, and not the compendious, far-less-worthy version in The Silmarillion (1977). Notice that Ungoliant, even having the upper hand, still addresses Morgoth as a superior (using ''you'' rather than ''thou,'' as Morgoth does), and that the story follows the true course of events as found in the Annals of Valinor, where Morgoth was overtaken by Ungoliant on the way to Formenos after he had defiled the Judgement Thrones of the Valar by Ezellohar. Christopher Tolkien is guilty too much of tampering which goes unnoticed by most Tolkien fans. I urge people to read The History of Middle-earth - it has all the best stuff which didn't survive into The Silmarillion.

Reminds me in a certain way of the deforms of Pius XII, the publication process of The Silmarillion...Patrick Sheridanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07995907911415177074noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8192580971664762668.post-35545929918992353172011-06-10T06:10:16.407+01:002011-06-10T06:10:16.407+01:00Thanks for this post.
