McCarthy privately printed an edition of the book in 2000 titled Adrian Fortescue, Cleric of the Roman Rite: A Biography. I imagine it would be difficult to commission a reprint after his passing, and without access to a decent manuscript copy.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8192580971664762668.post-22095965576527762862010-09-15T14:08:30.856+01:002010-09-15T14:08:30.856+01:00Brian M,
The text of the letters can be found in ...Brian M,

The text of the letters can be found in a book with the title 'Adrian' by the late Dr. John R. McCarthy, a priest in the USA.

Unfortunately, despite a mass of useful information, it it the most curious of books without chapters, index or even page numbers - hence why I didn't give the source when I quoted, what does one say 7/16" towards the back cover?

The book was published privately in the USA. I am trying to get a copy as the one I have at the moment was loaned by a friend eighteen months or so ago and I really must get around, however reluctantly, to returning it.Rubricariushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05050302650867319277noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8192580971664762668.post-15510875731741816722010-09-15T13:53:57.208+01:002010-09-15T13:53:57.208+01:00Can you tell us the source of these letters from F...Can you tell us the source of these letters from Fr. I am informed that if I look at in the proper spirit it will give the pontifical blessing – a striking sight which I am naturally anxious to enjoy. Hitherto I have not succeeded in convincing it of my spiritual propriety. I have told it all the things that I think it would like to hear, that I am dead nuts on Encyclicals, that ubi Petrus ibi the whole show, that Roma locuta est (she never stops) nulla salus est (I hope I haven’t got this mixed); I have even said polite things about its predecessors of the X and XV centuries: alas in vain! It hasn’t once burst into: Sit nome Domini benedictumme. When you come I hope you will start it: it can’t doubt your propriety of spirit!"Rubricariushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05050302650867319277noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8192580971664762668.post-64623349384327337692010-09-12T00:53:16.005+01:002010-09-12T00:53:16.005+01:00Sorry folks, ex fide left a very cogent comment wh...Sorry folks, ex fide left a very cogent comment which I accidentally deleted (I was using my iPhone and I tapped the wrong button I think), and Blogger can't moderate deleted comments, so here it goes:

Your point about the cult of personality that has become so much part of the papacy in the last two centuries is very valid. It means the Holy Father can't in practice be any more "pastoral" for his flock than could Lenin, Mao or Saparmurat Niyazov. I personally think that's a terrible waste of a fairly good Bishop of Rome!Patrick Sheridanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07995907911415177074noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8192580971664762668.post-82739380393570996242010-09-11T16:04:43.271+01:002010-09-11T16:04:43.271+01:00Patrici!

Tell him to look after his own diocese and not to write any more Encyclicals. Also, that there were twelve apostles and that all bishops are their successors. Also, to read the works of St. Paul, also to open his front door and walk out, also that the faith handed to our father is more important than either the Sacred Heart or certain alleged happenings at Lourdes."

Adrian Fortescue DD, letter, 18/06/1920Rubricariushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05050302650867319277noreply@blogger.com
