When I listen to it, I like to imagine that this may have been the sound of Orthodox Church music if the fall of Constantinople never happened and Western ecclesial culture had been allowed to "cross pollinate" more with the East. But I am a weird Orthodox Christian. My favorite "version" of the liturgy is a highly Latinized former Greek Catholic turned OCA or ACROD version. Think Italianate iconography, consecration bells at the anaphora, and lace on the edge of the priest's sticharion.
