I have long considered Gabriel to be a friend, though, as an Eastern Catholic, I had looked askance at some of his anti-Orthodox sentiments. I have no wish to display any snark towards him, as he has been a man without guile, and sincere in his convictions.
Rather, I will pray for him, that he may continue along the path that he has chosen, and that we might work toward a time when East and West might have in common one, holy, catholic and apostolic church.
It is a pious hope that the churches might once again share the same sacraments and patrimony but nothing more. It is a schism that Christ alone can heal, all human effort is vanity.
